As HES starts a new school year, here is some material from 2017-2018 as a recap.  Also check out the companion blog entry for the first half of 2017-2018.

300 BOOKS DONATED from READ-A-THON book drive –> great job dolphins!  October 2018

The books collected by HES students and families were delivered to BOOK HARVEST in Durham.

Book Harvest provides books to children in central North Carolina and engages families and communities to promote children’s lifelong literacy and academic success. Having plenty of books at home helps children start kindergarten ready to learn, combat summer learning loss once they are in school, and identify as readers.

OLD BENCH – NEW LIFE:

the bench in it’s former location outside the K-1 building

The bench formerly outside the K-1 classroom building was recently moved to the K-2 playground. The bench was built and donated by the Brummer family, c. 2013-2014.

The bench built by the Brummer family used to live along the kindergarten/1st grade building. It got occasional use at that location, but most students and families just walked by it on their way in an out of the building. Several teachers suggested it might serve as a kind of fun gathering space on the playground, so we drew up a proposal to move it.

We set up the bench with some new flowers … and hope the bench will be well used in it’s new home on the playground.

The Brummers were former Co-Chairs for the HES PTA Grounds and Natural Trail Committee. They initiated a major clean out  of the overgrown bushes, brambles, saplings, and trees that had taken over parts of the campus.  During the Brummer’s tenure, approximately 20 crape myrtle trees were planted, mostly around the 100 building and the 200 building. In addition, several neglected (filled with weeds) planting areas were eliminated so we could concentrate all effort on a smaller number of garden plots.  The Brummers’ planning and hard work have allowed us in more recent years to enhance the areas that people see most often, turning the landscape and gardens into an even more welcoming feature of our campus.
