Student Life

HES cultivates a student community that values kindness, respect and responsibility.

Acts of good citizenship are recognized and encouraged both in the classroom and the school community.

Each week, the “Dolphin Splash Award” is given to the classroom that has received the most praise for good listening and respectful behavior on campus.

HES  students are encouraged to incorporate the “4 C’s” into their daily lives

HES offers opportunities to enhance leadership skills and build character through various school and community programs.

  • Terrific Kids is a student-recognition program sponsored by Kiwanis International that promotes character development, self-esteem and perseverance.

  • Student Ambassadors is a leadership group for students in grades 4-5, emphasizing school service.

The students lead campus tours for prospective families, help younger students on campus, and serve during other special events.

  • Junior SOCRATES is group for students in grades 4-5.

SOCRATES stands for Students Of Color Raising Achievement Through Enhanced Support.

Students are paired with a faculty mentor and take part in activities emphasizing teamwork, organizational skills, and goal-setting.

  • Reading Buddies is an HES program that matches readers in upper grades (2-5) with students just learning to read in kindergarten and 1st grade.

The Reading Buddies assist with one-on-one reading, instill confidence, and become role models for their younger partners.

Elective Clubs

In addition to instruction in the special areas of art, music, physical education and Spanish language, students in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 choose an elective “club” each quarter.

The clubs are lead by the special area teachers and take place during the school day.
